Why I Built This

The Moment That Changed

Nevada, 1985 — A desert highway

"A single raven, suspended above the road, wings beating furiously — going nowhere."

The year was 1985. A young Chris Owens and his father were on a summer trek across the country — just the two of them — hunting down ghost towns and long-abandoned mining settlements through country neither had ever seen. It remains one of his favorite memories from youth.

As the afternoon wore on, heavy winds picked up. Tumbleweeds raced across the highway. Dark clouds gathered overhead. Then they saw something strange: a single raven, just above the road, wings flapping furiously — yet not moving forward an inch. Suspended in place, pushing with everything it had against a force far stronger than it realized.

From the van, it looked almost comical. His father watched for a beat, got a kick out of it, and turned to his son.

"Looks like that raven needs to do three things," he said.
